HISTORY

1999

LEA Place Women's Resource Centre began the process of becoming an affiliate of Planned Parenthood Nova Scotia (PPNS). LEA Place had a keen interest in hiring a Sexual Health Educator to provide much needed services in the community. In partnership with the Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, LEA Place hired a Registered Nurse to assume the role of Sexual Health Educator.

2000

The PPNS board accepted Planned Parenthood Sheet Harbour (PPSH) as their sixth affiliate. Although now an affiliate, there was still no funding available to cover the operational costs so these costs were covered by LEA Place.

2001

PPSH was accepted as an affiliate of the Federation of Canada Planned Parenthood and was invited to work with them on a national project called, The How to Rural Toolkit for Sexual Health Programs and Services

2002

LEA Place's Board of Directors evaluated the role of the Sexual Health Educator and felt it wasn't possible to sustain without funding from PPNS. The Executive Director of The LEA Place remained on the Board for PPNS and worked with the provincial board and soon hired a Coordinator to review, develop and recommend policies and bylaws.

2002

PPSH is allocated $12,500 per year from PPNS. It was now possible for LEA Place to partner with the Youth Health Center (YHC) at Duncan MacMillan High School to hire a YHC Coordinator and Sexual Health Educator. When the YHC Coordinator position became full time, a part time Sexual Health Educator was hired for PPSH. Community partnerships began to grow.

2005

A Well Women's Clinic was established at the Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital providing services for women in the surrounding areas. Over the years this program continued to grow in popularity and is now a much needed service for providing sexual and reproductive services to women and now men in the area. You can get birth control prescriptions, pap tests, breast exams, prostate exams and much more. For more info or to book an appointment, call the SHSHC at (902) 885 3693.
